US and China agree to one-year pause on punitive tariffs

In a surprise move, US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have agreed to put the brakes on punitive tariffs imposed by Trump last year. The fragile truce marks a temporary reprieve for businesses caught in the crossfire of the ongoing trade war between the two superpowers.

The issues that dominated discussions during their face-to-face talks in South Korea centered around China's tight grip on rare earth metals, which are essential for manufacturing critical components like smartphones and electric vehicles. Trump had previously threatened to impose 100% tariffs on Chinese imports as retaliation against Xi's control over these vital materials. However, in a stunning reversal, Beijing agreed to hold off on implementing new measures – including those targeting NVIDIA, a leading US tech firm.

According to reports, China will pause the new tariffs for at least a year, while Trump is required to lower Chinese tariffs by 10%. The temporary truce appears to be a result of negotiations between the two leaders, with Trump reportedly discussing semiconductors during their talks. Notably, Beijing signaled its openness to allowing NVIDIA to sell AI chips in China, reversing an earlier decision that had prevented the company from doing business there.

However, other contentious issues remain unresolved, including the future of TikTok in the US. The Trump administration claims to be close to a deal that would see the US gain majority ownership of the Chinese-owned social media platform, but no agreement has been finalized.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this trade war drama... 🀯 I mean, one day it's all about tariffs and the next, you gotta pinch yourself thinking Trump and Xi are actually chillin' 🍺. Rare earth metals have always been a wild card in these negotiations, but holding off on new measures for at least a year is a big win for China (and NVIDIA, lol). Can't help but wonder how semiconductors played into the talks, maybe those aren't as complicated as they seem? πŸ€” Still, the future of TikTok remains super murky... if Trump's admin really does get majority ownership, it'll be interesting to see how that shakes out. πŸ‘€

😊 This is kinda huge news! So like, China and the US are basically agreeing to call a truce on their trade war and it's amazing because who knows how long this stuff would've dragged on? The fact that they agreed to pause new tariffs for at least a year is super positive for businesses that got caught in the crossfire. It's cool that Trump was talking about semiconductors with Xi during their talks, maybe that's what helped them come to an agreement. But omg can we talk about TikTok though? Like, I know the US gov't thinks they should get majority ownership but it seems kinda fishy to me πŸ€”

I mean, have you tried those new pineapple pizza combinations? πŸ€” I was at this food festival last weekend and someone had this insane pineapple jam on top of prosciutto and mozzarella... I know it sounds weird, but trust me, it's actually pretty good! πŸ‘Œ The sweetness of the pineapple balances out the saltiness of the prosciutto. Anyway, back to the trade war thingy... it's nice that China is willing to give in a bit on the rare earth metals front. We should really focus on investing in renewable energy sources instead, you know? 🌞 It'd be so much better for the environment and all that jazz!

πŸ€” I'm actually surprised they didn't drag this out for longer tbh. Trade wars are so messy and annoying. It's good that China agreed to hold off on new tariffs but now we're just stuck with a temporary truce πŸ•°οΈ. And what about TikTok? That's still super uncertain. Can we get some clarity on that pls? The fact that Trump is demanding majority ownership of the app feels like a major overreach to me πŸ˜’

Meh, I'm not sure if this truce is gonna last or not... πŸ€” I mean, it's cool that China and the US are talking again, but let's be real, we've been down this road before with some pretty big consequences. Rare earth metals, semiconductors... these are like, super important stuff for tech companies. And now they're just gonna chill on the tariffs? Sounds too good to be true to me.

But hey, at least NVIDIA gets to sell those AI chips in China again. That's a win, right? πŸŽ‰ I'm curious to see how this plays out with TikTok though... Trump wants majority ownership of that thing? That sounds like some major corporate bullying to me. Can't say I'm stoked about the future of US-China relations or tech policy just yet...

OMG, can you believe what's happening with the trade war between the US and China? 🀯 Like, I was thinking it was never going to end... but now it seems like they've reached a temporary truce! πŸ˜… It's all because of those rare earth metals though - I mean, who knew they were so important for making our phones and electric cars work? πŸ“±πŸ’» Trump was really threatening to impose 100% tariffs on Chinese imports, which would've been super bad news for businesses... but in the end, China agreed to hold off on new measures and even gave NVIDIA a green light to sell their AI chips there! πŸ’Έ It's like, progress or something? πŸ€” Now we just have to wait and see what happens with TikTok - is it going to stay in China forever or can US companies own majority shares now? The uncertainty is kinda stressful... 😬

just saw this news about trump & xi agreeing to pause tariffs 🀝. gotta think, 100% tariffs were getting pretty ridiculous anyway πŸ™„. hope they can actually make some progress on those other issues like tiktok πŸ€”. can't help but wonder if china's just playing a long game here 😏. anyways, at least for now, it's a reprieve for businesses caught in the crossfire πŸ’Έ. fingers crossed it leads to real change πŸ”₯

So China is just gonna chill on their tariffs for a year and what's Trump giving up? Like 10% on Chinese goods? That's it? I mean, I guess it's better than nothing, right? But still, it seems like Xi Jinping got the upper hand here. The fact that China agreed to not slap NVIDIA with new tariffs is a big deal for US tech companies. And now they're even gonna let them sell AI chips in China? That's some serious goodwill from Beijing. But let's not forget, this truce doesn't mean all the other issues are just gonna magically resolve themselves... like what's gonna happen to TikTok? I'm still not convinced that Trump's got a good deal lined up for US ownership...

I don’t usually comment but... this trade war thing is getting so complicated lol 🀯 I mean, one day it's all about tariffs and the next it's like, "hold on, we can talk about this" πŸ˜… And now they're just gonna pause everything for a year? That sounds like a pretty big sigh of relief for businesses, especially those in tech. Rare earth metals are such a big deal, I don't know how anyone makes smartphones and electric cars without 'em πŸ€–πŸš— But at the same time, this just feels like a temporary reprieve... what's gonna happen next? Are they actually gonna figure out some way to make this trade war thing work? πŸ€” It's all so uncertain right now 😬

πŸ€” I mean, can you believe this? One year without tariffs? It's like they're saying, "Hey, let's just chill for a bit and not fight over these rare earth metals." πŸŒŽπŸ’‘ I know Trump likes to make big threats, but sometimes it takes a human face-to-face with someone to calm things down. And nice move by China on NVIDIA – that's a major win for US tech! πŸ™Œ But what about TikTok? Still stuck in limbo... will we ever get a resolution on this one? πŸ˜•

OMG!!! πŸ˜πŸ’– Can you even believe this?!?! The world is literally one big happy place right now! πŸŒŽπŸ’• I'm so down for this trade war truce between the US and China - it's like a weight has been lifted off everyone's shoulders! πŸ’†β€β™€οΈ Those rare earth metals were already stressing me out, can you imagine if we didn't have access to them?! 😩 But now we've got a reprieve and I'm all about it! πŸŽ‰ The fact that China is being super cool about NVIDIA and semiconductors too? 🀯 Mind. Blown. Let's keep the positivity vibes going and hope this truce leads to even more amazing things! πŸŒˆπŸ’–

just when u thought it was all about trade wars 🀯 china and usa are like, actually trying to make nice for once πŸ™ xi and trump had some serious talks in south korea and now they're agreeing on a temporary truce πŸ•ŠοΈ it's not all good news tho, china is still holding out on some major issues like their grip on rare earth metals πŸ’Ž but hey, at least we won't have to deal with 100% tariffs for now 😌 also, nvidia might finally be able to sell those ai chips in china πŸš€ still gotta wait and see what happens with tiktok tho, that's a whole other can of worms πŸ€ͺ

OMG 🀯 just heard about this crazy truce between Trump and Xi! I'm still trying to process how they managed to hammer out a deal that stops tariffs for at least a year 😲. Rare earth metals are literally the backbone of our modern tech, so it's insane that both sides were willing to back down over them. But, tbh, it's also kinda concerning that some issues like TikTok still haven't been resolved πŸ€”. How's this gonna affect small businesses and consumers in general? Can we really trust a truce when there are still so many big-ticket items on the table? πŸ€‘

OMG, can't believe what just went down! 😱 So Trump and Xi finally agreed on something and it's all good for now 🀞. I mean, 100% tariffs would've been a total disaster for the economy πŸ“‰. China pausing new measures is a big win for NVIDIA too πŸ’». Still don't know what's gonna happen with TikTok though πŸ˜•. US trying to take control of it? 🀯 That's some serious power move πŸ’ͺ. Can't wait to see how this all plays out πŸ‘€

😬 I'm surprised they're not talking about the elephant in the room - TikTok 🀯! How can you have a trade war truce without addressing the elephant? It's like having a dinner party with your in-laws and ignoring the whole "I'm only here for the free food" thing. Get serious, guys! The fact that Trump is still trying to muscle TikTok into the US market while Xi Jinping has agreed to pause new tariffs just shows how little they care about actually making a deal. It's all about symbolism at this point πŸ™„

man this trade war thing is wild 🀯, i mean china was like 100% gonna take down us tech companies with those rare earth metals and now we're cool for a bit? 😎 but seriously, it's crazy that trump had to back down on those tariffs. i feel bad for nvidia though, they were right in the middle of this. and omg what about tiktok tho? the truce is just delaying the inevitable πŸ’Έ is us gonna own up tiktok or what? πŸ€”
