Canadian PM Carney apologises to Trump over anti-tariff Reagan ad run by Ontario premier

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has apologized to US President Donald Trump over an anti-tariff advertisement aired by Ontario Premier Doug Ford. The ad, which features a clip of former Republican President Ronald Reagan speaking out against tariffs, sparked a significant escalation in tensions between the two countries.

Ford had commissioned the ad as part of his campaign against tariffs imposed by the Canadian government, with the clip from Reagan's 1980 State of the Union address aimed at emphasizing the economic costs of trade wars. However, Carney had privately expressed opposition to the ad and had even warned Ford not to run it.

Carney revealed that he had made amends with Trump during a dinner meeting hosted by South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Wednesday. "I did apologize to the president," Carney stated when asked about the incident.

The ad's airing led to a swift response from Trump, who announced plans to increase tariffs on goods from Canada and halted trade talks with Ottawa. The US leader also took issue with the Canadian prime minister's efforts to reduce reliance on the United States, describing them as "very nice" during their meeting earlier in the week.

Carney attributed his improved relations with Xi Jinping, China's president, to this conversation, which he described as a turning point in Canada-China ties. The two leaders discussed foreign interference, among other issues, marking a significant shift after years of strained relations between Ottawa and Beijing.

In South Korea, Carney emphasized the need for Canada to diversify its trade relationships and move away from relying too heavily on the US. "It can't happen overnight," he said, but expressed optimism about the progress being made in this area.

πŸ€” So Trump's all upset cuz some old clip of Reagan was used against him... like, what's new? πŸ™„ Anyways, Carney did apologize to Trump which is cool I guess. But what really got me is how quickly things escalated between the two countries over a commercial ad. It's like, chill out guys! πŸ˜’ And then they just suddenly shift gears and start talking to Xi Jinping... what's up with that? 🀝 China's president is like, super important these days so I guess Carney thinks he can use this convo to smooth things over? πŸ€‘

ummm canada needs 2 step up their game 🀯 they cant just sit back n let the usa dictate their trade deals newsflash dont be a pushover! πŸ˜’ and also what's with the reagan clip tho? didnt they know that was like 40 yrs ago lol πŸ™„ and btw, carney's got some major game if he can smooth things out with trump n xi Jinping at the same time πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ

This whole thing with the ad is wild πŸ˜‚! I mean, it's like they're trying to out-do each other in a game of 'who can be more dramatic'. Canada apologizes for the ad and suddenly everyone's best buds again πŸ€—... except for Trump, who's still salty about it. And let's not forget Carney's secret meeting with Xi - that's some master diplomatic work right there πŸ™Œ!

I'm not sure what to make of this whole 'diversify our trade relationships' vibe, but I guess it's a step in the right direction? 🀝 Canada's been relying on the US for ages, so maybe it's time to shake things up. But at the same time, they're still trying to negotiate with them... it's like they're stuck in some kind of trade limbo πŸŒ€. Still, I'm rooting for Canada to make some moves and start forging new connections πŸ”—!

I don’t usually comment but... I think it's crazy that they went back and forth over an ad πŸ˜‚ like that. I mean, I get why Carney was worried about the ad, but come on, Trump is already sensitive about trade deals πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. And now Canada has to deal with the fallout? Not good for our friends up north πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦.

I don't know what's more surprising - that Ford didn't listen to Carney or that Trump actually took offense πŸ˜’. Either way, it just shows how tense things are between the US and Canada right now πŸ’”. I hope they can get back on track soon. And yay for improved relations with China! πŸ™Œ

πŸ€” so like, I get why carney apologized to trump, but also what's up with ford not even consulting him first? πŸ™„ and that ad is some pretty slick stuff - using reagan's words like that was genius... but at the same time, it's a pretty thin line between "emphasizing the economic costs" and just being inflammatory πŸ€‘ anyway, glad to hear carney made amends with trump, maybe they can actually get something done on tariffs... and omg, canada-china ties? 🀝 that's some big news!

umm you know what's crazy? i was just thinking about how much i love trying new restaurants 🍴 and i was like what if we had a global food fest where everyone brings their fave dish from their country? that would be so cool! 🌎 can u imagine trying all sorts of new flavors and cuisines in one place? my friend's cousin went to this awesome Korean BBQ spot downtown and it was life changing lol anyway, back to canada... i'm kinda surprised carney apologized to trump about the ad thingy πŸ€” what do u think would happen if we just started having more chill conversations between leaders? maybe world peace wouldn't be so far fetched 😜

I'm low-key impressed that Carney was able to smooth things over with Trump so quickly πŸ˜…. I mean, you have to wonder if there were some behind-the-scenes deals made or something. It's a pretty big deal for Canada to be able to pivot on its trade policies and get back in the good books with the US. But let's be real, this is just another example of how geopolitics can play out like a game of whack-a-mole πŸ€Ήβ€β™‚οΈ. One moment you're at odds with one country, the next you're courting favor with another. It's like, what's going on here? Are we living in some kind of trade war timeshare? πŸš¨πŸ’Ό

πŸ€” I don't get why they're making such a big deal about this ad thing... like what's the harm in using some old Reagan clip? It's not like Carney and Ford were trying to attack Trump or anything πŸ˜’

And honestly, it feels like both countries are just trying to one-up each other with these trade talk tantrums πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I mean, we're all adults here, right? Can't they just have a calm conversation about tariffs instead of sending threatening ads and tweets? πŸ™„

Also, I'm kinda glad Canada is finally making moves to diversify its trade relationships... like, China isn't going anywhere, you know? 😊 And Carney's optimism about progress is nice to hear. Maybe this is the start of some actual real change? 🀞

Ugh, what's with all these countries and their politics πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ?! Like, I'm watching this Canadian prime minister apologize to Trump over some ad that was pretty cool imo... it had Reagan in it! πŸ™Œ Who doesn't love a good Reagan clip?! 😎 But for real though, why do world leaders have to be so drama-prone all the time? 🀯 Can't they just chill and talk about something actually interesting, like what's gonna happen next in Stranger Things or something?! πŸ“Ί Anyway, it's kinda cool that Carney was able to make amends with Xi Jinping, but let's not forget, he was also talking trash to Trump during dinner... some people just can't handle the truth πŸ˜‚.

so carney finally apologized to trump over that ad thingy... i gotta say, it's a bit late in the game considering how much drama it caused πŸ€”. still, better late than never, right? on a positive note, though, it's cool that carney had a convo with xi jinpeng about foreign interference and all that jazz πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ. canada-china relations have been pretty frosty for ages, so this might actually be a step in the right direction... or maybe not? 😊

πŸ€” I think it's kinda weird that they're still going back and forth like this over some ad πŸ“Ί. Like, can't we all just get along? It feels like it's getting to the point where tariffs are just an excuse for politicians to be all dramatic and stuff πŸ˜’. I'm glad Carney was able to smooth things out with Trump though - it's always better when countries can talk through their issues rather than letting them escalate into a full-blown trade war 🚫. And on a separate note, good on Carney for making progress with Xi Jinping - Canada needs all the friends they can get! πŸ‘

πŸ€” Come on, guys... what's going on here? So Carney apologizes to Trump over an ad that's basically just some old Reagan clip? And now they're going to escalate tariffs and trade talks? Like, what's the real issue here? I'm not buying it. πŸ€‘ Where's the proof that this ad was the catalyst for all this drama? I need more context. Sources, please! πŸ’―

omg u gotta see dis 🀯 so canada's prime minister mark carney just apologized 2 us president trump over an ad that was pretty inflammatory lol idk what's going on with them rn but apparently they had a convo @ a dinner meeting hosted by south korean president moon jae-in and carney apologized for the ad 😊

anyway, it looks like the ad sparked some major tensions between canada & us πŸ€” and now trump is all like "i'ma increase tariffs on canadian goods" and stuff πŸ“¦ not cool, imo. but hey, carney's trying to play both sides here by building bridges with china πŸš— and diversifying canada's trade relationships 🌎

idk if it's a good move or not, but carney seems optimistic about it 😊 and that's what matters right? the fact that he's willing to take risks & try new things πŸ’ͺ

😏 So what's good fam? I gotta say, the drama between Trump and Carney is wild 🀯. Like, who knew Canada could get under Trump's skin like that? 🀣 But for real tho, it's no surprise that tensions flared up - trade wars are a whole different level of crazy 😬.

I'm loving how Carney held it down with Xi Jinping tho πŸ‘Š. Those two actually having a good convo about foreign interference and all that jazz is pretty impressive πŸ’‘. And now Canada's branching out to other trade relationships, which is a major win πŸŽ‰. It'll take some time, but I think this diversification thing will pay off in the long run.

As for Ford's ad... bravo to him for taking a stand on tariffs πŸ™Œ. Even if it did ruffle some feathers 😳. But let's give Carney credit too - he knew when to hold back and now things are looking up πŸ’¨. Only time will tell how this all plays out, but one thing's for sure: global politics is never boring πŸ˜‰.

Dunno what's more embarrassing - Trump using a 35-year-old Reagan ad or him actually taking it seriously πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ.

And Carney getting praised for being diplomatic with Xi Jinping after that dinner meeting? Give me a break, he just gave Beijing some slack so they don't get all bent out of shape about Canada's newfound friendship πŸ™ƒ.

πŸ€” Trump's all-mighty ego is showing again... Can't a Canadian premier even air an ad without getting a reaction from the President? πŸ™„ And what's with the US trying to isolate Canada and China at the same time? It's like they think they can play us against each other. πŸ˜’

OMG, Trump's got a thing for Reagan now... I mean, who doesn't love a good clip of The Gipper, right? 🀣 Anyway, Carney's apology to Trump was probably a nice gesture to avoid a trade war – but let's be real, we all know the US is just going to keep on keeping on with those tariffs. Ford's ad might have backfired, but at least it got people talking about tariffs... and Canada-China relations are actually getting better? πŸ€” I guess you could say Carney's making progress, one dinner meeting at a time! πŸ˜‚

I'm still trying to wrap my head around all this Trump drama 🀯... so Canadian PM Mark Carney had a dinner meeting with Trump and now they're all buddy-buddy again? Like, what even is that? πŸ˜‚ I mean, Carney apologized for some ad that was basically a Reagan reboot, but it seems like Trump just wanted to stir up more trouble. And now Canada's trying to diversify its trade relationships, but it feels like the US is still trying to one-up them every step of the way... πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

I feel bad that it came to this between 2 big economies like the US & Canada πŸ€•. I mean, they've been friends for ages. Maybe they should just sit down & have a calm chat about tariffs instead of resorting to all this back & forth πŸ’¬. The ad was probably meant to be a clever way to get people on board with the anti-tariff movement but it ended up causing more problems than it solved πŸ€”. I'm actually kinda curious to see how trade talks go from here - do you think Canada will manage to diversify its trade relationships and reduce its reliance on the US? 🀞
