Phillies stay or go: The bench guys

Phillies Bench Players: Who'll Stick and Who Won't in 2026?

As the Phillies enter the offseason, one area where the team can improve is their bench play. The results from last season's pinch hitters were underwhelming, with a batting average of just .232 and only two home runs across 190 plate appearances. However, utilityman Edmundo Sosa showed promise, hitting .276 with 11 homers over 89 games.

Sosa, entering his final year of arbitration eligibility, is likely to be back in the mix for a bench role. He played multiple positions and demonstrated a strong ability to fill in for injured players. The question remains whether he'll take on an even larger role next season.

Another player who's been touted as having a utilityman-esque role is Otto Kemp. The 26-year-old showed flashes of power and ability to play different spots on the field, according to Phillies President Dave Dombrowski. However, his potential spot on the roster may be more settled than initially thought, with Dombrowski hinting that he could become an everyday player.

For Wilson, who's out of minor league options and has one year left under team control, the fight for a roster spot in spring training is uncertain. A disappointing 2025 campaign, including a .198/.282/.369 slash line over 52 games, puts him on shaky ground.

Injuries also played a role in Johan Rojas's development as an outfielder. Despite a promising .224 batting average in his MLB debut, he struggled and was eventually demoted to the minors. With Kyle Schwarber potentially leaving via free agency, Harrison Bader holding a mutual option, and Castellanos being rumored for release or trade, Rojas is fighting for a spot on the roster as the team's fourth outfielder.

Garrett Stubbs and Rafael Marchán will face increased scrutiny behind the plate if the Phillies fail to re-sign J.T. Realmuto. Marchán was a primary backup in 2025 but struggled with a .210/.282/.305 batting average over 42 games, while Stubbs has two years left under team control but no minor league options.

As spring training approaches, these players will need to prove themselves if they hope to stick on the Phillies' roster.

I'm low-key worried about the bench play this offseason 🤔. Philly needs someone with some real pop and a solid bat behind Schwarber's departure. Edmundo Sosa is def a player to watch, but Otto Kemp seems like he might be getting a spot on the roster before he even tries out 💪.

And can't forget about Wilson - a rookie year that was basically a total disaster 🤦‍♂️. It'll be tough for him to prove himself next season. And if they don't re-sign Realmuto, those catcher spots are gonna get super competitive 🔥.

I just hope Philly doesn't mess up the outfield situation again ⚾️. Rojas and Bader both showed flashes of potential last year, but it's hard to trust 'em without some more development time. And Castellanos... well, I don't even wanna think about that one 😬.

Gotta keep an eye on these guys in spring training - whoever shows up ready to put in the work might just find themselves a key spot on the roster 🌟

I'm not sure about this bench depth thing, is it really that crucial for a team? I mean, last season's numbers were pretty underwhelming, but you can't just write off guys like Edmundo Sosa and Otto Kemp already. Sosa showed some promising skills, and Kemp has the potential to be an everyday player. But what if they just need to tweak their approach or find the right hitters to back them up? I'd rather see them focus on getting the core guys solid before worrying about the bench spots. And Wilson's numbers in 2025 were pretty bad, but you can't give up on him that easily either. What are the chances of him bouncing back?

I'm thinkin' the Phillies should give Edmundo Sosa a big role next season 🤔. He showed some serious skills last year and can play multiple positions, which would be super helpful if some of the other guys get hurt. But at the same time, I'm not sure about Otto Kemp - he's got some pop in his bat, but if he becomes an everyday player, that might limit Sosa's chances 🤷‍♂️.

And what's up with Wilson? He had a rough season last year and now he's fightin' for a spot on the roster? I think they should give him another chance to prove himself in spring training. Maybe he just needs a fresh start ⚾️.

I'm also curious about Rojas - he's got some potential, but he struggled when he came up last year. If the Phillies keep Schwarber and Bader, that might push him down the depth chart 🤞. But hey, spring training is all about provein' yourself, right? ⚡

Sosa's utility is real 🤝, might be the only one holding it down this offseason 🎯. Kemp's power game could take him out of the bench role tho 🚫. Wilson's bat needs serious work 💪, and Rojas needs a break from injuries 🤕.

seems like phillies gotta make some changes with their bench, didn't impress much last season 🤔. edmundo soса looks promising tho, might be a good pick up again this year. but otto kemp's spot might be set in stone 🙅‍♂️. wilson's gotta work hard to stay on the roster, his numbers were pretty bad last year 😬. and what about rojas? he showed some potential but had a rough start... gotta keep an eye on him too 👀

This is like politics - everyone's got a stake in this bench role 🤝. You gotta wonder, what's the system gonna do to help out guys like Sosa who showed promise? Are they gonna give him the vote of confidence he needs or just let him play by numbers again? 🗳️ And what about Kemp, is he getting too big for his britches trying to steal the everyday player role from others? 🤔 I mean, the team's gotta decide if it's all about loyalty or letting the best players shine. It's like a game of musical chairs - whoever sticks around gets to stay on the bench, but who's gonna be left out in the cold when spring training kicks off? 🎸

The Phillies are going to have some tough decisions to make in the offseason when it comes to their bench play 🤔. They're gonna have to decide who's gonna step up and provide some much-needed production, especially with guys like Sosa and Kemp showing promise but also having limitations 🔮. On one hand, you've got Edmundo Sosa, who's been pretty reliable in his utility role, but can he take on more responsibility? And then there's Otto Kemp, who could be an everyday player if the Phillies want to give him a shot 💪.

On the other side, guys like Wilson and Rojas are fighting for scraps after underwhelming performances 🤕. I think it's safe to say that if they don't step up their game, they'll be looking elsewhere by spring training ⏰. And what about Garrett Stubbs and Rafael Marchán? If the Phillies don't re-sign Realmuto, they're gonna need someone who can hold down the fort behind the plate 🚫.

It's gonna be interesting to see how all this plays out, but one thing's for sure: spring training is just around the corner, and these guys are gonna have to bring their A-game if they wanna stick on the Phillies' roster 🔁.

omg i cant wait for next season lol. i think edmundo sosa is def gonna get a bigger role cuz he showed some legit skills last yr 🤔 his .276 batting average is crazy 4 a utilityman 2 b honest tho, otti kemp seems like he could be an everyday player nxt season if dombrowski says so 😂 wilsn & rojas r on shaky ground tho. i think we need more depth in the outfield cuz schwarber might not come back 🤷‍♀️ & castellanos is like a wild card rn 🎲. marchán needs 2 step up behind the plate if they dont sign jt realmuto, lol 😂

Man I think the Phillies need to give Edmundo Sosa more reps next season 🤔. He showed promise in his pinch hitter role and can play multiple positions which is huge. If he can bring that same energy as a regular starter, it could make the team so much deeper. Plus, with some of these young players like Otto Kemp possibly becoming an everyday player, I think Sosa's value goes up even more 🚀. He's gotta prove himself in spring training but I got faith in him 💯

idk why philly is so worried about their bench lol they can just sign some free agents or trade for someone decent 🤷‍♂️ and i'm like "hey edmundo saza is a utilityman, how hard is it to make him an everyday player?" 🙄 anyway, otto kemp could be the real deal but we'll see. wilson's numbers were straight trash so that's on him. johan rojas needs to get his act together or he's outta there 🔥
