Detroit’s Castalia cocktail bar is closing at the end of the year - Detroit Metro Times

Detroit's Castalia Cocktail Bar to Close at the End of the Year Amid Highs and Lows.

In a surprise move, Detroit's beloved craft cocktail bar Castalia, located in Midtown, will be closing its doors for good at the end of this year. The news was announced recently on social media by the ownership, who cited their eight-year run as a reason to "go out on top."

Castalia has been a staple of the city's nightlife scene since 2018, operating from a garden-level space within the Sfumato building, which also houses a perfumery. The bar gained fame for its unique pairing of cocktails with fragrances by Sfumato, creating an immersive experience for patrons.

Contrary to reports of financial or logistical issues, Castalia's co-founder Kevin Peterson explained on a recent podcast that their decision is driven by a desire to evolve and innovate further. "The structures we built to climb higher now constrain us," he said. "We've answered the questions that needed to be addressed when Castalia was born."

In an effort to bid farewell, Castalia will serve its final cocktails throughout the end of the year. The bar has also created a special "Afterlife Menu" to mark the occasion, inviting patrons to come and experience their final offerings.

The news comes as a bittersweet surprise for fans of Castalia, who have grown accustomed to the bar's innovative drinks and welcoming atmosphere. As the ownership bids farewell, they express gratitude to everyone who has visited Castalia over the years, reminding that "a life is like a garden – perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory."

awww thats sad to hear castalia is closing down 🍸😔 its been a staple of detroit's nightlife for so long and i loved their unique fragrance pairing concept 👃🍹 they really outdid themselves with that afterlife menu though lol what a cool way to say goodbye 💀 cant wait to try those final cocktails! 🎉 do you guys think kevin peterson was being genuine when he said the structures were constraining them or just trying to spin it in a more positive light? 🤔

man thats such a bummer 🤕 castalia was one of my fave spots in detroit always loved their unique cocktail & perfume vibes 👍 cant believe theyre closing down after 8 years what kind of "afterlife menu" r they serving tho? hope the owners are good and not just jumping ship 😐 anyway gotta say its crazy how much change happens in a city like detroit where u can find hidden gems like castalia every now and then 🤞

omg, cant believe castalia is closing 🍸😢 its been one of my fave spots in detroit for ages i loved their crazy cocktail & scent combos 👃🏻💧 what a shame they're not citing financial struggles tho? sounds like the owners just wanna keep innovating 💡 anyway, gotta try that afterlife menu 😋 and i heard it's gonna be really special 🎉 🍸

omg i'm literally shattered rn castalia was more than just a bar to me it was an experience 🍹💔 kevin peterson's message about evolving and innovating further made so much sense, i get why they wanna move on now that they've achieved everything they set out to do 🎉 but at the same time it's hard to accept that we won't be able to enjoy those signature pairings with fragrances anymore 😭 the afterlife menu sounds like a great way for them to say goodbye tho, gotta try all their final creations 💕

awww man 🤕, just found out that Castalia Cocktail Bar in Detroit is closing down at the end of this year... they've been killing it since 2018 with their crazy fragrant cocktails 🍹💨. It's like, what's next for Detroit nightlife? 😩 I guess we'll just have to wait and see how things evolve (pun intended) 💡. Can't say I'm surprised tho, the world is always moving forward, right? ⏱️

🤕😢 castalia gonna miss u 🍹💔 i know ur closure is due to innovation and growth 🚀💡 not bummer tho 💕 u have amazing menu 👌 afterlife menu sounds so cool 😋 can't wait to try it out 🎉 what's next 4 u kevin 🤔👍 u deserve a celebration 🎊🥳

aww man 😔 it's sad to hear that Castalia is closing down at the end of the year... i mean, i get what the ownership is saying about evolving and innovating further, but still 🤔 it feels like we're gonna miss that special spot so much. their perfumery-scented cocktails were always a game-changer for me! 🎉 on a positive note tho, i love how they're celebrating their legacy with an "Afterlife Menu" - it's like a farewell party in a glass 🍹👏 and i'm def gonna be there to toast the good times with them 💫

Man, i'm really gonna miss this place 🤕... castalia was always so unique and special. I love how they combined cocktails with fragrances - it was such an immersive experience. And their "afterlife menu" is a genius move to go out with... it's like they're giving the people one last chance to try all their crazy creations. i think its cool that they're not doing this because of some financial or logistical issues, but because they wanna keep pushing themselves and trying new things. it's like they're leaving on their own terms, which is really admirable. anyways, im def gonna make sure to go there at least 5 more times before they close up shop 🍸👋

Ugh, just heard about Castalia closing down 🤕 I mean, it's been 8 years and they're just gonna shut down? Can't they find a way to make it work instead of just saying they need to evolve? And what's with the "Afterlife Menu" thing? Sounds like some fancy marketing gimmick to me. They're not even having an actual going away party, just serving their last drinks and calling it a day. Guess you can take the bar out of Detroit but not the bar out of its owners...

man i'm so down on this 😔 castalia was always my go-to spot when i'm out in midtown they had some crazy unique drinks and it felt like a whole different world in there 🌎 the afterlife menu sounds like a great way to bid farewell tho, gotta try those final cocktails 🍹👍

Ugh I'm literally devastated 😭 this is the end of an era for Detroit's nightlife scene. I mean, Castalia was more than just a bar to me it was an experience... that unique blend of cocktails and fragrances was like nothing else out there 🌿💥 I've had so many amazing nights there with friends and even met some of my favorite bartenders 😊 But I guess all good things have to come to an end, right? Can we get a revival or something though? 🤔 That "Afterlife Menu" is just too sad 🍸😢

man, it's crazy how things come full circle... eight years of creating this amazing space and now they're closing up shop 🍸😔. I get why they want to evolve and innovate further, but still super sad for the fans who've grown attached to Castalia - that place was always so much fun! 💖 their whole fragrance-to-cocktail thing was genius, by the way... can't wait to try those "Afterlife Menu" cocktails 🍹👻. it's weird how they're framing this as a positive, like they've got this newfound freedom to create something even better... fingers crossed for what's next 🤞

omg u guys im dying 🤯 just heard about castalia closing down and its literally heartbreaking i went there last year with my friends for bday celebrations and we had the best time lol kevin peterson said something so relatable "the structures we built to climb higher now constrain us" like can't say much more than that, am literally shaking thinking about all the amazing memories we'll never make at castalia again 🤔 anyway they have this afterlife menu tho and i need to try it ASAP 💀

awww man!!! 🤕 detroit's castalia cocktail bar is closin' down 🍸😢 i've been goin to that place for ages and it's just not the same without it. they're doin a final farewell menu tho which sounds kinda cool 👀👌 but its just not the same as gettin a new drink from kevin or the team 🤓 i'm gonna miss their perfumy cocktail combos so much 💔 cant believe its already endin of the year 🎉🎊

Man, I'm gonna miss this place 🤕... Castalia's closing down and it's like, what's next for Detroit's nightlife scene? They were doing something so unique with the fragrance pairings and it was always a fun spot to go. The fact that they're going out on top and not due to some financial struggles is pretty cool, I guess. It's bittersweet because you never want to see a place like this close down 🎉... but at least they're leaving on their own terms. The "Afterlife Menu" sounds like a great way to wrap things up - gotta try those final cocktails! 😊
