Phillies contract extension candidates: Are any impending free agents longterm pieces?

The Philadelphia Phillies are set for a financial windfall after the 2026 season, with several players' contracts expiring and totaling around $82 million. This influx of cash could lead to some savvy moves by the front office, who have shown a tendency to retain key players through extensions.

While it's likely that many of these departing players will seek new deals in free agency, there are a few candidates who might be worth considering for in-season extensions. One such player is Jesús Luzardo, who is entering his final year of arbitration at just 28 years old. The Phillies may want to keep him on hand if he can regain his form after an inconsistent 2025 season.

Another prospect worth extending is Jhoan Duran, a left-handed reliever who has emerged as one of the team's lockdown late-inning options. His age and prime years make him an attractive target for a preemptive extension, which would prevent the Phillies from having to pay top dollar in free agency.

However, Edmundo Sosa may prove to be a tougher sell. The utilityman is likely to attract significant interest on the open market, and it's unclear whether the Phillies want to commit to him as a starter or keep him in a more limited role.

The team will also face decisions about several other players, including Alec Bohm, Adolis García, and José Alvarado. While all three have been solid contributors, their time with the Phillies may be coming to an end. The prospect of replacing them with young upstarts from the farm or on the open market could be a more attractive option.

The Phillies' recent track record in extending players like Matt Strahm and Zack Wheeler, as well as signing Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto to long-term deals, suggests that they value retaining key contributors over letting them walk in free agency. Whether this approach will pay off for the team's financial future remains to be seen.

As teams continue to navigate the complexities of the modern sports market, bold moves like extending a player with a high ceiling could have significant rewards down the line. Will the Phillies take a chance on one of their young stars? Only time will tell.

I think it's really interesting that the Phillies are in a good position to make some savvy moves after all those contracts expire. They've already shown they're willing to invest in guys like Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto, so I'm not surprised they'd want to lock up someone like Luzardo who could be a key contributor in his prime.

I also love the idea of extending Jhoan Duran, he seems like an underrated gem for them. But it's also smart of them to keep an eye on the bigger picture and consider their options for guys like Alec Bohm and Adolis García - those young players from the farm could bring a fresh energy to the team.

One thing that might be worth considering is that while extending some of these players could save them money in the short term, it's not always clear whether it'll lead to long-term success. Like with any business decision, there are pros and cons to weigh out. Still, I think the Phillies have a good foundation to work with and making smart moves like this could pay off big time! 🤔

I'm thinking they should make some smart moves and lock in some of these key players. Like Luzardo's been inconsistent, but he's only 28 so still got years to turn it around 🤔. And Jhoan Duran is like the rock for that bullpen, can't imagine losing him on a big deal 🌟. But Edmundo Sosa might be tricky - not sure if they want to commit to him full-time ⚠️. I mean Phillies have been smart with signings in the past, like Schwarber and Realmuto, so maybe they're just waiting for the right moment to strike 💸.

I'm loving how the Phillies are getting ready to make some big moves 🤑. With all these contracts expiring, it's gonna be interesting to see who they choose to keep and who they let go 💪. I mean, Jesús Luzardo is definitely a possibility for an extension - he was on fire last season before slumping a bit in 2025 🔥. And Jhoan Duran is like the ultimate closer - gotta keep him locked up 🚫.

But Edmundo Sosa might be a tough one to crack, even with his solid contributions 🤔. Alec Bohm and Adolis García are another story altogether though - they were so good last season that it's hard to imagine them not being part of the future 🌟.

I love how the Phillies have been taking care of their own by extending guys like Matt Strahm and Zack Wheeler 💯. It's only natural that they'd want to keep their own stars in Philly 🏠. Who do you think is gonna be the first player they'll extend? 🤔

I'm so stoked that the Phillies are gonna get that financial windfall 🤑! It's definitely gonna make them more competitive in the league. I think Jesús Luzardo is super underrated and if they can get him to regain his form, he'd be a great signing ⚾️. And Jhoan Duran is like a lockdown closer, no question 🔒. But Edmundo Sosa might be a tough sell because of how hot he's gonna be in free agency 🤔.

The thing I love about the Phillies' front office is they're always thinking ahead and trying to lock up their key players 📈. They signed Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto to long-term deals, so it's cool to see them do that again with other guys like Luzardo and Duran.

It's gonna be interesting to see how they navigate the free agency market for guys like Alec Bohm, Adolis García, and José Alvarado 🤯. I'm not sure what they're gonna do, but I trust the front office to make some smart moves 💡. They might just pull off a surprise signing that blows everyone away 😮!

lol I remember when Matt Strahm was just a rookie 🤣. Anyway, imo the Phillies are gonna pull off some crazy trades or signings this offseason. They gotta make some noise to stay competitive with those other playoff teams. Jesús Luzardo could be the real deal, but Edmundo Sosa is like that one uncle who always shows up to family gatherings... you love him, but he's not really reliable 😂. And what's up with Alec Bohm? I thought he was a stud player 🤔. Either way, it's gonna be an interesting offseason in Philly! 💸👀

So the Phillies are gonna make some cash after this season and now they're thinkin' about what to do with it 🤑. I think they should definitely keep Luzardo, he's still got some good years left in him and would be a solid addition to the team. And Duran is a great pitcher, might as well lock him up while he's hot 🔥. But Sosa, I don't know about that guy... he's been solid, but if the market gets crazy for him, it's better to cut their losses early. And what's up with Bohm and García? They're not getting any younger 🤔, maybe it's time for some young blood from the farm to take over. The Phillies have been making some smart moves in the past, so I'm curious to see if they'll follow that pattern this time ⏰.

I think it's cool that the Phillies are going to have some extra cash coming in 2026 🤑. It's like they're getting a bonus payment for doing well! They should probably consider keeping Jesús Luzardo and Jhoan Duran, 'cause they've been solid players on the team. But Edmundo Sosa is kinda tricky - if he wants to stay with the Phillies, that's great, but if not, they need to be ready to let him go too 💪. I'm also wondering what will happen to Alec Bohm and Adolis García... might they get traded or released? 🤔

The 2026 season is gonna be interesting 🤑. The Phils are in a sweet spot financially and they need to make some smart moves. I think extending Luzardo would be a good start, he's still got that potential 🔥. But Duran is the real prize here, he's only 25 and can lock down that bullpen for years to come 💪. Sosa is a tough one, but if they can keep him as a utility guy, it's not a bad risk 🤔. The question is, are they willing to take a chance on some of the younger guys? We'll see 👀

man they're gonna make some big moves in philly this offseason 🤑👊 i think it's a good idea to extend luzardo and duran, they've got some potential and it'll save them $$$ next year 🤑 also gotta keep an eye on bohmun he's been solid but if they can find someone better on the farm or via trade that's def worth it 💡

I think its gonna be tough for them to keep everyone 🤔. I mean, Luzardo and Duran are solid choices but you gotta consider the cost 🤑. Sosa might get too much $$$ 💸. And then there's Bohm, García and Alvarado... they're all in a similar boat. It's like they're gonna have to decide which young players can stay on the roster. It's a bit of a gamble but I guess its worth it if you think you got a shot at the playoffs 🏆

🤔 so if they do decide to extend Luzardo or Duran it's gotta be a big contract cuz they're 28 already 🙄 and still got a ton of good baseball left in them. And the Phillies would be crazy not to lock up Sosa too, but like you said he's gonna get interest from all over 📈. Alec Bohm and Alvarado might just have to take one for the team tho, they've had some solid years already 😊. But seriously, if they wanna keep their core young players on board it's better to do it now than risk losing them in free agency later 💸.

ugh, 82 million is gonna get drained super fast 🤑💸 i mean idk about Luzardo or Duran but Sosa's gonna be like 30 mil easy in free agency mark my words ⚠️ he's a nice piece but not worth that kinda cash ... & what about Bohm? alec's time is probably done too, might as well get some young guns from farm ready to take over
