Rep. Tlaib Backs Gilchrist for Governor, Touting His Support for Working-Class Families
U.S. Representative Rashida Tlaib has thrown her weight behind Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II's gubernatorial campaign in Michigan, praising his record on working-class families and labor unions.
In a video posted on social media, Tlaib expressed her trust in Gilchrist, citing his lived experience as a father and advocate for those struggling to make ends meet. "I trust Garlin," she said. "His lived experience... has shown up at the picket line... He believes in our folks that are returning citizens who need a second chance." Tlaib also highlighted Gilchrist's support for Michigan's Clean Slate Program, which aims to clear the records of residents with past convictions after a set number of years.
Gilchrist's outspoken criticism of Israel's military campaign in Gaza and his refusal to accept donations from pro-Israel groups have also drawn attention from progressive voters. The endorsement may give him an edge among those who support economic expansion and justice reform.
Tlaib, the only Palestinian American in Congress, has long been a champion for working-class families and marginalized communities. Her backing of Gilchrist could energize progressive voters and Arab Americans, who are expected to play a key role in next year's Democratic primary.
As the 2026 gubernatorial election approaches, Gilchrist is facing stiff competition from other candidates, including Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson, and former Cape Coral Mayor Marni Sawicki.
