Toyota and Pony.ai start mass producing robotaxis for China

Toyota has partnered with Pony.ai to manufacture robotaxis on a large scale for China's market, marking the first time the technology will be widely deployed across Tier 1 cities such as Beijing and Shanghai. According to the plan, more than 1,000 of these autonomous vehicles are expected to hit the roads this year.

The Pony.ai bZ4X is one of three vehicle models intended for commercial services in China, following two existing ride-hailing service models. The robotaxis will gradually integrate into Pony.ai's fleet as part of the company's goal to reach 3,000 vehicles by the end of 2026.

Toyota previously launched the non-autonomous bZ4X model last year, which is now available for public purchase. In contrast, Pony.ai's version is equipped with its Gen-7 autonomous driving system, featuring innovative features like automatic vehicle unlocking via Bluetooth and in-cabin voice interaction.

The company's partnership with Toyota comes as a significant development in the self-driving car industry, given that it was founded in 2016 and began testing and operating vehicles since then. In 2022, Pony.ai received permission from Beijing to offer self-driving services to the general public, marking an important milestone for the Chinese autonomous vehicle firm.

Currently headquartered in Silicon Valley with a US IPO filed in 2024, Pony.ai has positioned itself as a key player in the growing autonomous car market.

πŸš—πŸ€– Toyota and Pony.ai teaming up to revolutionize China's roads is huge news! πŸ“ˆ Did you know that by 2030, over 50% of new cars sold worldwide will be electric? ⚑️ The bZ4X model is a great step forward for autonomous tech.

Stats are cool, but what I want to know is how people in China feel about robotaxis πŸ€” According to recent surveys, 70% of Chinese citizens are willing to ride in self-driving cars πŸ“Š. That's pretty impressive! πŸ’‘ Also, Pony.ai's partnership with Toyota will create over 10,000 new jobs in the manufacturing sector by 2027 🚜.

Did you know that the global autonomous vehicle market is expected to reach $1.5 trillion by 2030? πŸ€‘ It's gonna be a wild ride! 🎒 And let's not forget, Pony.ai has been working on this tech since 2016 – they're making waves in the industry 🌊. Can't wait to see how it all plays out! πŸ˜ƒ

I'm so happy to hear that Toyota and Pony.ai are teaming up to bring robotaxis to China πŸš€πŸ’¨! This is such exciting news for the future of transportation, especially with all the traffic congestion we're dealing with. Can you imagine having a safe and reliable ride in a car that's always learning and adapting? It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it 😍. And I'm loving how Pony.ai is pushing the boundaries with tech like automatic unlocking and voice interaction - genius! πŸ€“

I'm still on the fence about robotaxis πŸ€”. I mean, it's cool that they're getting more autonomous vehicles on the road, but have we thought this through? Like, what happens when there's an accident or someone gets hurt? Don't get me wrong, safety is a big concern for me too, and I'm sure Toyota and Pony.ai are trying to address that. But it feels like we're moving really fast into uncharted territory πŸš€. And the fact that these vehicles will be integrated with ride-hailing services? That's just a whole new can of worms 🐜. What about job security for human drivers? I'm not against progress or anything, but let's take a step back and consider the implications before we roll out robotaxis on a massive scale πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ.

Robotaxis are coming for everyone πŸš—πŸ˜±... just kidding not yet, but like, seriously though, 1,000 robotaxis hitting the roads this year? That's a lot of cars on the road, especially with no human driver at the wheel... what if they crash? 🀯 And have you thought about all the jobs that'll be lost when every taxi and ride-hailing service starts using autonomous vehicles? Like, what about all those people making a living driving around all day? πŸ€‘ Not to mention the safety concerns, like how will we know who's in control if something goes wrong? πŸ’”

What's up with these big corps joining forces like this?! 🀝 Toyota and Pony.ai are basically merging their tech for robotaxis and it's gonna be lit πŸš€! Like, imagine cruising around Shanghai or Beijing without any drivers - sounds crazy but also kinda cool 😎. The fact that more than 1k of these autonomous vehicles will hit the roads this year is wild πŸ“ˆ. And I'm low-key curious about how they're planning to handle all the logistics and maintenance for these things πŸ’ͺ. Still, it's awesome to see Pony.ai getting recognized as a major player in the self-driving game after all those years of testing πŸš—πŸ’¨!

πŸ€” I'm loving the idea of robotaxis taking off in China! It's crazy to think about how far we've come since Pony.ai first started testing and operating vehicles back in 2016 πŸš—πŸ’». The fact that they're partnering with Toyota, a major player in the automotive industry, is a huge boost for their growth plans πŸ’Έ. I'm intrigued by the Gen-7 autonomous driving system - automatic vehicle unlocking via Bluetooth sounds like a game-changer! πŸ“± It's also awesome to see Pony.ai taking the lead in this industry and setting the bar high for others to follow πŸ†. Can't wait to see more of these robotaxis hitting the roads, especially in Tier 1 cities like Beijing and Shanghai πŸŒ†!

omg i'm so glad they're finally moving on this autonomous thing πŸ€–πŸš— China's gonna be all over it by 2026 lol meanwhile we're still stuck in the slow lane here πŸ˜… i mean, pony.ai seems like a solid player but toyota's involvement is a major boost. hope these robotaxis aren't gonna drive everyone crazy though πŸ™ƒ

idk why they're rushing into this robotaxis thing... China's gonna have like 1000s of these self-driving cars on the road and what's to stop them from malfunctioning? πŸ€–β€β™‚οΈ it's not like they've even had real-world testing on a large scale yet, but nope, let's just slap some fancy tech into a car and send it out. And have you seen the size of those cities in China? 1k robotaxis won't exactly make traffic in Beijing or Shanghai any less crazy...
