Yorgos Lanthimos’s ‘Bugonia’ is a paranoid masterpiece for the post-truth era - Detroit Metro Times

Yorgos Lanthimos's 'Bugonia' is a masterclass in paranoia, delving into the darkest corners of human psychology and societal fragmentation. Set against the backdrop of our increasingly uncertain world, this film is a scathing critique of contemporary society's willingness to accept the absurd as reality.

Lanthimos's latest offering follows Teddy Gatz, a conspiracy-obsessed warehouse worker played by Jesse Plemons, who kidnaps Michelle Fuller (Emma Stone), CEO of a pharmaceutical company that he believes to be in league with an alien species. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Lanthimos is more interested in probing the fringes of our collective sanity than offering straightforward entertainment.

One of the standout aspects of 'Bugonia' is its expertly calibrated balance between humor and horror. The film's darkly comedic tone is reminiscent of Lanthimos's earlier works, such as 'The Lobster,' but with a newfound prescience that makes it feel disturbingly contemporary.

Lanthimos's script, written by Will Tracy, allows for some welcome absurdity, shifting the audience's allegiances between Teddy and his scheme to "save the world," and Michelle, who is both victim and antagonist. This constant oscillation keeps viewers on their toes, unsure whether they should root for the paranoid conspiracy theorist or laugh at the absurdity of it all.

Plemons and Stone deliver performances that are both sympathetic and infuriating. Their characters' flaws are expertly calibrated to elicit a strong reaction from the audience, making it impossible not to question one's own place in the world. Teddy's desperation is palpable, while Michelle's clinical detachment is unnerving.

Throughout its runtime, 'Bugonia' keeps viewers on edge, never quite sure whether we're watching a work of satire or an unsettling exploration of human psychology. This razor-thin line between humor and horror is what makes Lanthimos's masterpiece so effective.

Shot on stunning 35mm film, the cinematography by Robbie Ryan adds to the film's elegantly composed aesthetic. The grainy texture gives every frame a tactile immediacy that draws viewers into Teddy's warped world.

'Bugonia' may not be an easy watch for everyone, but for those willing to venture down this rabbit hole, Lanthimos delivers a movie that will leave you questioning your place in the universe and whether your co-worker might just be a lizard person. And if that's not what Yorgos Lanthimos movies are supposed to do, I'm not sure what is.

Grade: B+

come on, this film isn't even that deep 🤔 it's like yorgos lanthimos took every conspiracy theory from the internet threw 'em in a blender and hit puree... and then served up some dark comedy with a side of existential dread. don't get me wrong, jesse plemons and emma stone are great, but teddy's character is basically just a caricature of every paranoid person you've ever met 🙄

and let's be real, the whole "alien species" thing is just lazy writing 🚫 i mean, come on, that's not even a subtle commentary on societal fragmentation... it's just lazy. lanthimos has always been better than this 👎

idk why ppl r makin such a big deal about this film lol its like watchin teddy go full conspiracy theorist mode 🤣 but seriously tho i think its kinda clever how lanthimos balances humor & horror but at the same time its also super uncomfortable to watch especially when u realize ur supposed 2 feel bad for teddy's character lol and can we talk about emma stone's performance tho? she's literally perfection 👑

man i just watched bugonia and it was like my mind got totally messed up 🤯 the way yorgos lanthimos does satire is so underrated i mean we need more people calling out our societal norms and pushing us to think about how absurd things can get.

and jesse plemons and emma stone are like a dream team they're both so good at playing these complex characters that make you want to root for them even though they're basically terrible 🤷‍♀️

i love how lanthimos doesn't shy away from exploring the weird stuff that's on our minds but still manages to keep it funny, i mean have you seen the lobster? this is like the next level of his style and it's so thought-provoking

anyway, i'm not gonna lie, watching bugonia was a wild ride and i need some time to process everything 🤯

🤯 I just watched Bugonia and I gotta say, it's a wild ride 🎠. The cinematography is 🔥 on 35mm film, gives the whole thing this gritty feel 😓. But seriously, Lanthimos is a genius at creating this absurd sense of unease that'll keep you guessing till the end 🤔. Plemons and Stone are incredible as the two leads, their characters have so much depth it's hard not to get caught up in the conspiracy theory madness 🤯. The humor and horror balance is expertly done, had me laughing one sec and cringing the next 😂👀. Can't say I've seen anything like it before... but now that I think about it, what if they're watching us right now? 🕵️‍♂️😱

I gotta say, this new film 'Bugonia' by Yorgos Lanthimos is like something out of my wildest nightmares 😳🎥. It's like he's staring right into our collective psyche and just... yeah 🤯. I mean, the way it balances humor with horror is so on point – it's like he's poking fun at us for accepting this crazy world we live in 🤪.

And that lead actor Jesse Plemons? He's just so believable as a paranoid conspiracy theorist 🤷‍♂️. You can't help but feel for him, but also kinda want to roll your eyes and think "seriously dude?" 😂

What I love about this film is how it makes you question everything – even yourself 🤔. It's like, are we really in control of our lives or is someone just messing with us? 🤯 And that cinematography? Whoa, the 35mm film adds to the whole surreal vibe 🎥.

Anyway, if you're looking for a movie that'll make you feel uneasy and unsure about what's real, then 'Bugonia' might be the one for you 😅. Just don't say I didn't warn you...

omg i know exactly what yorgos lanthimos is going for with bugonia its like he's taking all our collective anxiety and paranoia about the world today and amplifying it into this freaky masterclass in psychological horror lol teddy's character is literally giving me existential dread 24/7 i mean, jesse plemons as a conspiracy-obsessed warehouse worker is just perfect and emma stone as the cold corporate pharma CEO is like, the ultimate symbol of our messed up society.

i'm loving how lanthimos balances humor and horror its not easy to pull off but he does it so expertly that you're literally on edge the whole time wondering if teddy's just a hero or a lunatic. plemons and stone deliver amazing performances too their characters' flaws are so well-written that i find myself rooting for teddy despite knowing he's being super manipulative lol and that cinematography? wow, it adds this grainy texture to the film that makes it feel like you're watching some kind of surreal dream. grade: a-

I just watched 'Bugonia' and man... it's like my brain is still trying to process everything. I mean, I get why people say the main guy Teddy is kinda crazy, but at the same time, you can't deny he's got some major points about the pharmaceutical industry 🤔. The way Lanthimos balances humor with horror is so masterful, it'll keep you guessing until the very end 😱. And the cinematography? 🎥👍 totally underrated! The 35mm film gives the whole thing a gritty feel that adds to the overall unease. I'm still thinking about the ending... and whether or not I should start looking over my shoulder 💀.

omg u guys i just saw bugonia and it was SO mindblowing!!! 🤯 i loved how yorgos lanthimos is like totally tackling the whole paranoia thing in a way that's both hilarious and super unsettling at the same time. jesse plemons as teddy gatz is giving me all the feels, he's so relatable yet also kinda terrifying. and emma stone as michelle fuller is just perfect, she's got this whole "i'm not even mad, i'm just disappointed" vibe going on that's just 💀. i loved how lanthimos balances humor and horror, it's like the line between them gets thinner and thinner until you're not sure what to feel anymore 🤪. i need a rewatch ASAP!!! 😂

🤯 this film is straight fire but also super unsettling lol, i mean teddy's obsession is wild but you can't help but feel for him at the same time. like, is he really that paranoid or just a bit crazy? and michelle, girl, she's got some serious issues too 🤷‍♀️. Lanthimos is a genius at making us laugh and cringe at the same time. i love how the film subverts our expectations and keeps us on edge. it's like, you're not sure if you should be rooting for teddy or just shaking your head at his antics 😂👀. and that cinematography tho, it adds to the whole vibe of the film 🎥🔥

I need more balance between the dark and light vibes, you know? Like, it's super unsettling but also kinda laugh out loud funny 🤣. For me, it's like watching a train wreck – you don't wanna look, but you can't help gazing at it 😲. The cinematography tho is stunning, those 35mm shots are 🔥! And the cast, oh man, Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone are giving me life 🎉. It's like they're so invested in their characters' absurdity that it just draws you in 💀. Can we get a part two, though? I need more of this existential crisis 🤯.
