Editorial policy
Selection
We follow a set of established news outlets and give priority to stories that several of them are covering. The label “Reported by N outlets” shows how many of them carried the story when our article was written.
Facts and attribution
The facts in the news section of each article come from the reporting of the outlets named in the text. We write in our own words and name the outlet behind each claim. We do not invent quotations.
Viewpoints
The Viewpoints section is commentary. It is written under the names of our columns, such as The Skeptic or The Long View, each of which looks at a story from one fixed angle. The columns are not individual people, and what they say is opinion and analysis, not additional reporting.
Corrections
If an article is wrong, we correct or remove it. Developing stories change; the time printed on each article shows when it was written.
Advertising
The site may show advertising. Advertisers have no say in which stories are covered.
